THE PRIMARY DIVISION
The Primary Division – which includes Grade 1 through 3 – places an emphasis on early literacy. CIS Primary Teachers worj as a team to share resources and develop the primary program. Writing, Reading, Oral Communication and Media Literacy form the basis of the Language Arts program at CIS. Vietnamese students study Vietnamese Language and Culture at this level and the other students of different nationalities and backgrounds study French as an additional language. In Mathematics, our students work through the year mastering the five strands of the Math program which include: Number Sense & Numeration, Measurement, Geometry & Spatial Sense, Patterning & Algebra and Data Management & Probability.
Science & Technology and Social Studies are also taught throughout the primary year. Each primary classroom teacher also teachers the Health & Physical Education curriculum while the Aquatics or Swimming Program is taught by specialty teachers in the pool. At CIS, we have a music specialist who teaches the Music portion of the Arts program. Visual Arts, Drama and Dance are taught by the classroom teachers. Arts performances, exhibitions and concerts are extra-curricular activities that students enjoy at this divisional levels. Grade 4 through 6 constitute Junior Division. As in the Primary Division, our Junior Division teachers work together as a team to plan and execute the curricular program. At this level, our students are working to further develop and expand their fluency in reading, writing and speaking in English, Vietnamese or French. Mathematics continues in the five strands and becomes more complex and rigorous as students move through the various expectations at the three grade levels (4,5 and 6). Science & Technology expands to include experimentation and deeper inquiry where “Big Ideas” are explored. Students continue their exploration of the various cultures, lands and customs that make the global family. Health & Physical Education are taught by a specialty teacher at this divisional level. Cooperative games and active living are foundational tools to promote life-long health. Swimming instruction continues through the Junior grades and becomes more rigorous and demanding. Students at this level also have the opportunity to join our Junior Division athletics and aquatics teams and represent our school at local and city-wide events and competitions. Vocal Music continues to be taught by a specialist teacher. Junior Choir and festivals are offered. Visual Arts, Drama and Dance are taught by the classroom teachers as students’ exploration of the arts become more complex.
