The Principal is an employee of the CISS and reports to the Canadian International School System (CISS) Board of Directors, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

In relation to the International VCE Program, the Principal reports to the Board of Directors and collaborates with the Haileybury School Director of International Programs VCE Program entity in Australia to remain compliant with VCAA and VCE regulatory policies.

CISS Principals are qualified, capable and highly effective educational leaders who are willing to adapt to a different cultural context and to work as a team in a challenging educational environment. In each school the Principal is responsible for overseeing the program, the plant and the people. While the Principal may choose to assign duties to the Vice Principal and/or Lead Teachers, he / she is the person accountable to the Board.

Albert Einstein School delivers the Vietnamese National Curriculum Additional emphasis is placed on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). The Vietnamese curriculum is prescriptive and closely monitored by the Department of Education for Ho Chi Minh City.  In addition to meeting Ministry requirements the AES program provides additional English instruction, delivered by international and Vietnamese teachers, AES uses the Pearson UK iPS / iLS English Program. The Australian VCE Program is offered as a pathway for Grade 11 and 12 students to gain an internationally recognized secondary school credential.

Elementary School:  Commences in Grade 1 and ends at the completion of Grade 5. Mixed ability classes are capped at 25 and international teachers teach each class for 11 periods per week. Across all CISS schools, the emphasis is placed on Character Education. AES operates on the premise of continuous intake and age appropriate grade placement. International teachers focus on oral and written English language fluency, this is challenging in a unicultural environment where the learners can easily communicate in their native language.

Secondary School:  Commences in Grade 6.  Students may have as many as 16 Vietnamese teachers each delivering DOET approved, specific subject content: Biology, Chemistry, Civics, Geography, History, IT, Math, Physics, Vietnamese Literature, Art, Swimming, Physical Education, Technology, Vietnamese English and Clubs. Our emphasis is placed on a practiced Character Education program to develop resilience and values education in secondary students.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE PRINCIPAL

  • Supports the AES educational vision and strategic directions in building a world class private school system as determined by the Board of Directors.
  • Supports the work of the Board of Directors on new initiatives to widen the scope of CISS programs and activities.
  • Accountability for student achievement and well-being, student enrolment and retention, and sustainability of a highly qualified staff.
  • Demonstrates the ability to work collaboratively with the Board of Directors, the Leadership Team, the Operations Manager, all Academic and Administrative Staff, Parents and Community Partners.
  • Inspires public confidence in the delivery of education for all students as a world class private school.
  • Supports the strategic and systematic professional learning of the teaching staff.
  • Demonstrates expertise as an educational leader who is student-centered, able to build a culture of excellence, and lead staff with programs and instruction to engage and meet the needs of students.
  • Nurtures quality partnerships that support the work of the staff in the provision of a rich program of co- curricular, sports and athletics, leadership and student governance experiences and arts education that enables students to experience a holistic values-based education.
  • Promotes and models strategic use of data to improve learning and ensure a safe, caring and dynamic learning environment and school culture.
  • Co-implements with the Vice Principals / Lead Teachers annual school improvement planning and works to ensure the school improvement plans are aligned and coherent with the Board of Directors’ vision and strategic directions.
  • Implements the Annual School Financial Plan and budget to resource the annual school plan, school improvement plans.
  • Supports the Board of Directors in the effective development and result-oriented implementation of curriculum and co-curricular programs that ensures students success as English as a Second Language Learner.
  • Assists in the hiring and supervision of academic staff to ensure quality teaching and teaching methodologies to meet the needs of students where English is an additional language.
  • Collaborates with Admissions and Public Relations Marketing Staff in the public relations, marketing, and admissions processes.

Beyond a list of duties and/or responsibilities whether organized by month, term or semester, the principal must engender the confidence of his/her people. He or she must be seen as a presence or force in and beyond the school.

PROFESSIONAL ATTRIBUTES AND EXPERIENCE

The successful candidate will have at least 10-year experience as a Principal with a degree in Education; Master’s degree or equivalent is expected.

  • Demonstrated commitment to student success; strong foundation in assessment of students’ literacy and numeracy skills
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Experience implementing culturally relevant pedagogy
  • Proven ability to motivate, lead and supervise staff in a Grade 1-12 setting
  • Experience in staff development notably in supporting beginning teachers in TESL
  • Evidence of data-based decision making
  • Evidence of school financial management and budgeting experience
  • Experience in developing and implementing school improvement plans
  • Experience in the school review process
  • Experience in the international environment is a definite asset
  • Ability to work well under pressure and a high tolerance for ambiguity
  • Experience and knowledge of the requirements of the Victorian Curriculum Assessment Authority (VCAA) and VCE Program regulations is an advantage. Applicants may be required to complete the Haileybury School Offshore VCE Director’s Training program

The Canadian International School System (CISS-VN) operates four (4) school programs in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam:

  1. The Canadian International School (CIS) delivers the Ontario Curriculum Kindergarten to Grade 12 entirely in English. After Grade 10, students are eligible to apply to the IBDP Program Years 1 and 2, or continue in the Ontario Diploma Program in Grades 11 and 12 in Vietnam and in Toronto, Canada.
  2. The Bilingual Canadian International School (BCIS) delivers the Vietnamese National Curriculum, Grades 1 – 12 and instruction in English language oral and written fluency according to the Ontario Ministry of Education documents for Language Arts and Second Language Learners.
  3. The Canada-Vietnam Kindergarten (CVK) (two sites) delivers early childhood and pre-school programs for children ages 18 months to 5 years old.
  4. The Albert Einstein School (AES) delivers the Vietnamese National Curriculum, Grades 1 – 12 and the Pearson UK English iPS / iLS Program. AES also has an international secondary accreditation pathway for students who have completed the Grade 10 Vietnamese National Curriculum.  This pathway is for study of the two (2) years Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) through a partnership with Haileybury - a leading Australian school in Melbourne, Australia.
